Malawi: Overview

Malawi, officially the Republic of Malawi (formerly known as Nyasaland , nicknamed the Warm Heart of Africa, lies in Southern Africa, east of Zambia, west and north of Mozambique. The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi. Malawi is over 118,000 km2 (45,560 sq. mi) with an estimated population of more than 14,900,000. Its capital is Lilongwe, which is also Malawi's largest city; the second largest is Blantyre and the third is Mzuzu. The name Malawi comes from the Maravi, an old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area. 

Malawi boasts fantastic scenery, national parks and game reserves. Lake Malawi also offers snorkeling  diving, boating, and a relaxing shore under the sun’s warmth. Lake Nyasa, some 580 km long, is the country's most prominent physical feature; it contains more fish species than any other lake on earth.

Since January 2002 foreign nationals have been prohibited from buying freehold property under the (revised) Malawi National Land Policy, though foreigners may obtain leases, either from the Government, or from private owners. Foreigners already owning property are under pressure to become Malawi citizens, to retain freehold ownership.
